In March of this year, my sister Judy was diagnosed with leukemia. Since her diagnosis it has been a roller coaster of emotions. Our family has had to lean on each other and whenever we have a difficult moment, it's Judy that has lifted our spirits. She is filled with courage, faith, love & hope and has shared those feelings with everyone she knows. She has dealt with everything the doctors have told her to do with a cheerful outlook and a smile on her face. Judy has been an inspiration to other patients she has met at the hospital, encouraging them every step of the way. When she was discharged from the hospital after receiving chemotherapy, the halls were lined with nurses and staff cheering her on. It was very emotional to watch her thank and acknowledge everyone that had taken care of her. Judy has also been receiving incredible support from her colleagues at Mariner along with her friends and family. Her diagnosis was devasting news to receive for her and our entire family. What has happened since then has been nothing short of a miracle. Judy has responded well to the chemotherapy and has been able to stay healthy while she waited for her transplant process to begin. While Judy was in the hospital at KU Cancer Center, her first granddaughter, Kennedy Jude Porting, was born on April 9th at Overland Park Regional. She was able to meet her granddaughter over FaceTime but has since been able to hold her and enjoy some quality grandma time. What a blessing Kennedy has been to this family. For 27 years we have been raising money for research and organizations that support cancer patients and their families. Judy has benefited directly from three of those organizations. She has received grants from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for medications and patient support. She has also benefited from the medical advances that have been made in the fight against leukemia and other blood cancers. Judy also received a grant from the National Donor Marrow Program along with their help finding a donor for her transplant. We are grateful for the work being done at these organizations and for the support they have provided to Judy. It is a reminder that the work being done through Jared's Foundation and the support each of you has provided over the years means more now than ever. We still have more work to do. Stay tuned as Judy continues this journey.
I hope you will join us on October 11th as we continue to remember Jared, Jayne and all our loved ones in Heaven and to honor Judy's strength and courage.
P.S. On July 29th, Judy received the gift of life from her son Bryan who was her transplant donor. She is currently working towards the 100-day post-transplant time frame and continues to heal and get stronger every day.
Sincerely,
Tom
